Write your resume in Markdown and export it to PDF

A resume written in Markdown is plain text with a little structure: a # for your name, ## for sections, dashes for bullet points. That simplicity pays off. You can keep one master file, tailor a copy for each application in minutes, track changes with Git, and change the whole look with one click instead of fighting a word processor’s layout. Here is how to write one and turn it into a clean PDF.

A structure that works

Recruiters skim. A predictable order helps them find what they need in seconds: name and contact details, a two-line summary, experience, education and skills. Projects, certifications or languages can follow if they are relevant to the job.

Writing tips

  • Start bullets with a verb (led, built, reduced) and end them with a result. Numbers make results concrete.
  • Three to five bullets per role, fewer for older positions. Reverse chronological order.
  • Put dates in italics on their own line under the role, so they are easy to scan.
  • Keep links readable: show the address as link text, because a printed page cannot be clicked.
  • Tailor the summary and skills to each job description; the rest usually stays the same.

Make it look professional

Open the Style panel. For traditional fields such as law, finance or academia, Classic (a serif font) looks formal. For tech and design roles, Modern or Clean feel current. Keep colors restrained: a dark heading color and one accent for links is plenty. Choose Letter if you apply in the United States or Canada and A4 almost everywhere else.

Keep it on one page

The preview shows real page boundaries, so you can see immediately whether you spill onto a second page. If you do:

  1. Tighten the wording of your longest bullets first.
  2. Lower the font size by half a point (10 to 11 pt is a good range).
  3. Switch to narrow margins.

If two pages are justified, put <!-- pagebreak --> on its own line before a section heading so the break falls in a natural place instead of in the middle of a job.

Export a PDF that ATS software can read

Many companies run applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS) that extracts the text from your PDF. Click Download PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog: the browser writes real text, so it can be selected, searched and parsed. Turn off Headers and footers so the date and page URL are not printed. Avoid the Quick PDF option for applications, because it saves each page as an image and the text cannot be extracted.

A few more habits help parsers: use standard section names (Experience, Education, Skills), keep contact details in the body rather than in a page header, and do not lay the resume out with tables or columns.

Keep your master copy

Use More → Download .md to save the source file. The editor also keeps your latest draft in this browser’s local storage, but a file you control is safer. With the Markdown file in a folder or a Git repository, making a new version for a job is a matter of copying the file and editing a few lines.

Your resume contains personal data, so it is worth knowing that nothing is uploaded: rendering and PDF generation happen entirely in your browser. Need a refresher on the syntax? The Markdown guide covers everything the editor supports.
