How to convert Word to Markdown

  1. Choose the file

  2. Let it convert locally

    The file is converted in your browser with WebAssembly, usually in a second or two. The first time, the converter engine is downloaded once.

  3. Review the Markdown

    Check the result in the text box and edit it there if you need to.

  4. Copy, download or make a PDF

    Copy the Markdown, download it as a .md file, or open it in the editor to export a styled PDF.

Good to know

  • Use real Word heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2…) instead of big bold text: they become proper # headings.
  • Both modern .docx and legacy .doc files are supported.
  • Password-protected documents cannot be read — remove the password in Word first.

Word to Markdown: questions and answers

What does the Word to Markdown conversion keep?

Headings (from Word heading styles), paragraphs, bold, italic and strikethrough text, links, bulleted and numbered lists (including nested ones), tables and footnotes. Tables become GitHub-Flavored Markdown pipe tables and footnotes become [^1] references.

What happens to the images in my Word document?

By default each image is replaced by its alternative text, so the Markdown stays small and readable. Turn on “Include images” before converting to keep them: the .md file embeds them and the .zip download adds an images/ folder.

Can I convert old .doc files from Word 97–2003?

Yes. Legacy .doc files are supported as well as .docx and macro-enabled .docm files. Password-protected documents cannot be read until the password is removed in Word.

Is my Word file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is converted inside your browser tab with WebAssembly and never leaves your device. Files up to 50 MB are accepted.
